Lactarius subpurpureus Peck 1878
Lactarius subpurpureus has a medium sized smooth zonate wine-purple to pinkish cap that mottles with green from handling. Wine-red attached to subdecurrent gills that turn greenish with age. Cream spores. Latex is scant, wine-red, sparse becoming green and mild to somewhat peppery. Concolorous stipe has darker wine-colored circular pits called scrobiculations. Can be found under conifers in summer and fall, especially under Eastern White Pine and Hemlock.
