Caloscypha fulgens (Pers.) Bout. 1885
This is the only asco cup fungus in the Calocyphaceae family of the Pezizales Order. It is usually found in early spring on the forest floor among conifers, especially spruce and fir. It feeds on the seeds of these conifers. Often you can find the cones of these trees beneath the fruiting bodies. The smooth interior is pale yellow-orange to bright orange, while the outer surface is lighter in color. Mature to older fruiting bodies may have olivaceous to bluish marginal edges as seen in this photo. A vaguely rough lookalike is Aleuria aurantia, which, however, fruits later in the year and does not exhibit the greenish staining along its margin.
