It may also be native to Vermont, Maine and upper New York state. It has a dark brown to blackish tomentose cap, small round white pores than become brown and whitish stipe that is thinner at the apex and thicker at the base and that is covered with coarse dark fibers. Its white flesh becomes slightly pink on cutting. Leccinum melaneum’s spores are brown. It is mycorrhizal with birch and appears from mid-June to the beginning of October.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

The flesh and pores are yellow as is the stem background color. Just below the yellow stipe apex, the stem is decorated with dark red to red-brown smears and dots. The stipe base has whitish rhizomorphs which attach to a sclerotia, making this the only northeastern bolete known to have this feature. All parts quickly stain blue to blue-green and turn brown with age. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 23px; color: rgb(1, 0, 1); font-family: LucidaSans;"&gt;&lt;em&gt;Pulchroboletus sclerotiorum&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="color: rgb(1, 0, 1);"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 24px; color: rgb(1, 0, 1); font-family: LucidaSans-Demi; font-weight: 700;"&gt;is a relatively newly discovered bolete.
