Boletopsis grisea

Boletopsis subsquamosa 6805

Boletopsis grisea (Peck) Bondarsev & Singer 1941

Terrestrial, mycorrhizal with conifers. Roundish brown to grayish cap with an incurved and eventually a wavy margin. Unlike other fungi in the Bankeraceae family, this fungus has pores rather than spines. Pores are minute  and decurrent. Unlike true boletes, the pores cannot be separated from the flesh beneath the cap. Grows on the ground under hardwoods and conifers, particularly under pines, such as Scott’s Pine, in the autumn. Edible. They form mycorrhizal associations with mature broadleaf or conifer trees.
