Pholiota squarrosoides03870

Pholiota squarrosoides (Peck) Saccharide. 1887

This is one of the most common species of Pholiota in the northeast. It bears brownish somewhat erect scales on a slimy yellow to pale yellowish cap. Mature specimens may exhibit a dry cap. Remnants of its whitish partial veil can be seen on the cap margin and at the apex of the scaly stem, which is white above the ring. Gills are buff white, closely-spaced and become rust-brown from released spores as does the ring. The spores of Pholiota squarrosoides are smaller than those of its ‘look-a-like’, Pholiota squarrosa.
