White rotter at base of oak and beech. Edible. Commonly called the "Giant Polypore” or the “ Black Staining Polypore”. Fan-shaped leaves are larger than those of Grifola frondsa. Attached to tough stem. Saprobic on decaying logs, stumps and buried roots of hardwood. Parasitic on live trees. Blackens with handling and maturity, especially margins.
