
Species in this genus can be virtually any color. Some have zoned caps. The most important diagnostic feature is the presence of a sticky latex. Like their relatives, the russulas, with a few minor exceptions, these mushrooms easily break like a piece of chalk. Depending on the individual species, the gills are attached to somewhat decurrent. The mushrooms grow on the ground and are mycorrhizal with coniferous and/or deciduous trees. Depending on the species, they can be found from June through November. Their spore-print colors can vary between whites, creams and yellows.
