This bell-shaped shaggy white-capped mushroom curls up from the cap margin and liquifies as its black spores mature. It has free to almost free crowded gills. Its partial veil is on the lower part of the stipe. It grows in clusters or scattered on buried wood in grass, wood chips and hard-packed ground. It is found during mild weather from May through early June, and from September through October.
