These mushrooms have a fibrous cap, (frequently with a central knob) that can split radially as it expands. It is not uncommon to see remnants of the partial veil on the cap margin. Their attached gills may start out whitish, but they tyically turn gray to gray-brown as the spores mature. They fruit on the ground often in small groups and have an odor that is described as spermatic.
