This mushroom usually has a scaly cap, is slimy in some species, has pale yellowish attached gills, and often a ring. The brown spore-print will darken the gills as they mature. It can be found growing in clusters on the ground or on standing or fallen live and dead tree trunks. It appears in the autumn months of September through November.
