"Birch Bolete", "Scaber Stalk” It has a brown bun-shaped cap with soft flesh. White-gray pores. Stipe fibrous, club-shaped, gray-white with gray-black scales. Color of flesh barely stains when cut. Ochre-brownspore print. Mycorrhizal with birch, often on damp ground. Not a choice edible. Does not keep well once gathered. Widespread in eastern North America. Fruits singly or in small groups under birch.
