Obliquuis” means “slanting sideways”. “Chaga”  Parasitic on birch and other hardwoods. Inonotus obliquus forms a sterile, irregularly-shaped growth or ‘clinker’ on that appears primarily on birch that is infused with black mycelium so that it looks like burnt charcoal. The actual fruiting body is rarely seen and consist of a resupinate fungus that typically doesn’t appear until the tree is dead.
