In the past the Tricholomataceae family was much larger than it is currently. Gilled mushrooms with pale spores (white, pink or yellow) that could not be classified as amanitas, entolomas, waxy caps, lepiotas, or pluteus species were assigned to this family. Through phylogenetic analysis, mycologists have been able to exclude fungi in the following families: Pleurotaceae, Physalacriaceae, Marasmiaceae, Omphalotacea, Hydnangiaceae, Mycenaceae, the Hygrophoraceae and the Mycenaceae.
