Boletus huronensis

Boletus huronensis A. H. Smith and Thiers

This Boletus edulis ‘lookalike’ will make you very sick!

Unlike Boletus edulis, there is no white reticulation on the upper stipe. Also the pore surface and context bruises somewhat blue on cutting, which B. edulis does not do. Over time, the bluing changes to tan or reddish tan. Its yellow pores mature to brown. This hefty bolete grows in association with eastern hemlock. It can be found in summer and early fall. It is in the Boletaceae family of the Boletales order.
