Hydnum umbilicatum Peck
like its ‘sister’ Hydnum repandum, has spines beneath it cap. However, Hydnum umbilcatum, has a small, almost circular cap with a depressed center (which reminds some of us of a belly button). Hydnum repandum’s caps are relatively large and asymmetrical, and their stems are relatively short, especially compared with the stems of Hydnum umbilicatum. It is in the Hydnaceae family of the Cantharellales order.
