Neoboletus luridiformis subsp. discolor (Rostk.) Gelardi, Simonini & Vizzini
(Boletus discolor) is, like other boletes, an ectomycorrhizal fungus. This bolete occurs in Europe under hardwoods and conifers, in the west from Alaska to northern California under spruce and in the east under hardwoods and conifers. It may be that it will prove to be a different mushroom. In any case, it is fairly large and sturdy with a red-brown cap, small orange-red pores that fade with maturity and a chubby yellow stipe covered in red dots. All parts of this bolete stain dark blue with handling and cutting. Edible when cooked. It is in the Boletaceae family of the Boletales order.
