While there are a couple of genera and several species in the Schizophyllaceae family, the most common and cosmopolitan species is Schizophyllum commune. It grows from dead wood and looks similar to an oyster mushroom, but is much smaller and extremely hirsute, especially when young. To see examples of this beautiful fungus, click on the photo below.
