The Stereaceae family is in the Russulales order. Fungi in this group are often resupinate or partially so with a small overlapping cap. Their fertile surface is smooth, unlike that of similar appearing polypores. Stereums are saprophytic on dead branches and tree trunks. They lack clamp connections.
