Sarcodon scabrosus (Fr.) P. Karst. 1881

The literature on the various Sarcodon species in North America is confusing and awaits further treatment clarifying their mycorrhizal hosts (hardwoods or conifers) and their morphological features. Generally speaking they are reddish-brown with scaly caps, an inrolled margin and a depressed center. Their spines are tan with white tips and darken with age. They run down the stem which in these examples end in a green base. It is in the Bankeraceae family of the Thelephorales order.
