Phaeocalicium polyporaeum (Nyl.) Tibell (1979)

This is a tiny fungus that can be found throughout the year on the bracket polypore Trichaptum biforme. It has also been reported on lichenized areas of Trametes versicolor. At less than a milimeter high, it looks a bit like a burnt black liliputian matchstick, thus one of its common names is  ‘Black Matchstick Fungus’. It may be a lichenicolus fungi or possibly be related to lichens in some way. Its spores are light brown. It does not seem to harm the polypore in any way.
