Amanita brunnescens var. pallida may or may not be a species distinct from Amanita brunnescens. It has often been noted that specimens of whitish varieties can be found next to those that are brown. I going over my photos, I have noticed that the variable brown to whitish- brown specimens have been growing in mixed conifer-deciduous woods, while the white versions were growing under hardwoods exclusively. This may or may not be significant. Another difficulty involves separating this species from Amanita aestivalis since the descriptions of both tend to be extremely similar.
