Auricularia angiospermarum is one of two 'Tree Ears' common to the N.A. temperate zone. It is a saprotrophic jelly fungus that grows from dead hardwoods. The cap exhibits some ‘hairiness’ that can be seen using a magnifying loupetarda. The other "Tree Ear" we have is Auricularia americana, which grows on conifers, such as Balsam Fir. The species Auricularia auricula has been determined to be a European 'Tree Ear' that does not occur in N.A. Tree Ears are edible, but if you are taking blood thinners, it is best to avoid them. This is in the Auriculariaceae family of the Auriculariales order.
