Like other puffballs, Calvatia gigantea is a saprotrophic fungus. Found in disturbed areas in
grass, open woods, sometimes in fairy rings in late summer and fall. Soccer
ball size or more (a 60” roundish blob), weighing 50 lbs. has been recorded. This is a gasteroid, or stomach fungi in the Agaricaceae family of the Agaricales order of the Basidiomycota division.
