The Silky Piggyback mushroom, like Asterophora lycoperdoides, has star-shaped spores. Although it bears widely-spaced gills, the spores are actually formed on and are released from the cap. A russula parasite, it appears mainly on white russulas following a good downpour. Not edible. It is in the Lyophyllaceae family in the Agaricales order of the Basidiomycota.
