Lactarius vietus, Fries (Fries) 'Gray Milkcap’
Lactarius vietus has a pinkish-gray to violet-gray to buff convex and centrally depressed viscid cap when wet and sometimes a paler margin. It is unusually brittle. The gills are crowded, white to light yellow and become brown with bruising. The latex is white and dries grayish-buff or olive. The stem is smooth and easily broken. Spore print is pale cream. The Gray Milkcap grows on rotting wood or gregariously on the ground often in damp areas or moss and usually with birch. It tastes ‘acrid’ or peppery.
