Lactarius gerardii var. gerardii has a medium-sized, dry, vaguely velvety, umbonate, somewhat wrinkled brown to yellow-brown cap that becomes flattish with a central depression and a scalloped margin. Distant gills are white, decurrent, pleated near the stem apex. Stem is concolorous with cap, smooth, slightly velvety, dry, sometimes paler at the apex and becoming hollow. Spore print is white. Latex is white, unchanging and quite voluminous. Can be found in summer and fall in mixed forests and under hardwoods, especially oak. Taste is mild to somewhat acrid. This is in the Russulacae family of the Russulales order.
