Hericium erinaceus
consists of a single unbranched body which is attached to dead wood. Has longest spines – between 2-6 cm. On standing hardwoods, high up on tree projecting from wound. Need a ladder to get them. Taste is often sour. It is in the Hericiaceae family of the Russulales.
