Cystoderma amianthinum has a yellowish-brown to orange-reddish-brown finely granular conical to convex cap that is somewhat wrinkled from the disc outward. The cap margin is often initially adorned with fragile partial veil remnants which quickly disappear, as does the annulus. The gills are white, fairly close and attached to the stem, which is granular in the region below the ephemeral ring. The sporeprint is white. Cystoderma amianthinum is typically found growing under conifers, frequently in moss or in ground litter in summer and fall.
