"Hemlock Varnished Shelf" Shiny fan-shaped shelf annual polypore that has a short stipe. It grows on live and decaying wood of hemlock. Whitish flesh. Whitish pores that age brownish. Studies show it seems to have anti-tumor medicinal properties. Also aids healing in mice. Too tough to be considered edible, but it is commonly used to make medicinal teas. White rotter on hardwoods. A hard annual with a reddish lacquered-cap. Spore-bearing surface is white with small pores.
