Hydnellum aurantiacum ‘Orange Hydnellum’ (Batsch) P. Karst. 1879
This hydnellum is relatively easy to identify given its orange cap with a pale margin and orange stipe. When young it is quite velvety, but becomes rather lumpy or worty with maturity. Like other hydnellums, it is rather tough and inedible. The spines are white but turn brown as the spores are dispersed. It is mycorrhizal with conifers and can be found in coniferous and mixed coniferous-hardwood forests. It is one of a number of fungi that is sought after by dyers. It is in the Bankeraceae family of the Thelephorales order.
