Lactarius oculatus (Peck) Burlingham 1907

The ‘Eye-spot Milky’ is mycorrhizal with conifers. It is often found in moss growing in a damp environment in summer and fall. Lactarius oculatus is dark red-brown, especially over its pointed umbo. As it matures, the cap becomes flat and develops a central depression. The long stipe is concolorous with the cap color. Its gills are broad, cream to pinkish tan and stain pale pinkish-brown with maturity. Latex is scant and whey-like and doesn’t change color.
