Russula decolorans Fries starts out convex and eventually flattens or becomes sub-vase-shaped. It has an coppery orange cuticle with a central depressed disc that fades to yellow with maturity. It peels with difficulty to 1/3 of the cap’s radius. The close, broad, attached gills and the stem are white. Spores are cream to pale ochre. This russula has a mild to slightly acrid taste. Like Russula rubescens and Russula claroflava the flesh, gills and stem DISCOLOR from gray to black. Found in swampy pine woodlands growing alone, gregariously or scattered. It is in the Russulaceae family of the Russulales.
