Leucopholiota decorosa

Leucopholiota decorosa (Peck) O.K. Miller, T.J. Volk & Bessette 1995, 1996

Leucopholiota decorosa or the ‘decorated Pholiota’ has a very scaly cap and stem below the ring zone with up-curved cinnamon-brown scales.  The closely-spaced gills are slightly scalloped.  It grows from dead wood of broadleaf trees. Spore deposit is white. Edible according to old ‘Iron Guts' Charles McIlvaine, although others in the past 120 years have declared the edibility as ‘unknown’. It is in the Tricholomataceae family of the Agaricales order.

Similar species include Pholiota squarrosa and Pholiota squarrosoides which have brown spores, and Phaeomarasmius erinacellus, which is smaller and has cinnamon-brown spores.
