Lactarius mutabilis Peck 1890
The spotted Lactarius has an indistinctly spotted red-brown to vinaceous-brown tacky cap that may appear somewhat zonate and pitted and has a depressed center. Its latex is watery white, mild and stains the close, narrow white to cream subdecurrent gills pinkish-brown. The stuffed stipe color is the same as the cap, but paler, although it bruisers reddish from the base upwards. Spores are white to yellowish. Has the odor of maple syrup! It can be found in summer and autumn in mixed hardwood/conifer forests. Somewhat similar to L. camphoratus, L. quietus var. incanus and L. frustratus.
