"Birch Bolete", "Scaber Stalk” It has a brown bun-shaped cap with soft flesh. Tube layer is long relativre to cap flesh. White-gray pores are deeply depressed at stipe apex. Stipe fibrous, club-shaped, gray-white with gray-black scales. Color of flesh barely stains when cut. Ochre-brown spore print. Mycorrhizal with birch, often on damp ground. Not a choice edible. Does not keep well once gathered. Widespread in eastern North America. Fruits singly or in small groups under birch. It is in the Boletaceae family of the Boletales order.
