Hydnellum scrobiculatum (Fr.) P. Karst
This toothed fungus, like other hydnellums, has a corky texture. It is very similar to Hydnellum concrescens, which, however, is associated with oaks and other hardwoods. It is mycorrhizal with conifers in coniferous and mixed hardwood-conifer forests. ‘Scrobiculatum’ means ‘pitted cap’. The cap is also rather zonate in shades of brown to almost black and usually has a paler margin. The spores of all hydnellums are brown. It is not edible. It is in the Bankeraceae family of the Thelephorales order.
