Strobilomyces strobilaceus (Strobilomyces floccopus)
is a common bolete in the northeast. It is easy to distinguish it from other boletes. It has a black, brownish to gray-black shaggy cap and stipe and partial veil. The flesh stains red and then black. Spores are dark brown to black. They are mycorrhizal with hardwoods, especially oak. It is in the Boletaceae family of the Boletales order.
Some people like the taste of the cooked flesh. Others deem it altogether unappetizing.
