This is a velutinous maroon-brown cap when young becoming dark reddish-brown then fading to pinkish-tan with age. It (usually) bears a distinctive beveled edge. The flesh is white, but stains pinkish when sliced. The pores are initially off-white and become pinkish-brown and stain brown with age and handling. The stem is the color of the cap. This mushroom has a sweet odor, and a mild taste. It is easily confused with Tylopilus ferrugineus. While both favor oaks, Tylopilus ferrugineus is typically found in grasses rather than woods. It is in the Boletaceae family of the Boletales order.
